A new proof of a theorem of McMullen
by
Peter Brinkmann
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

We present a sequence of pseudo-Anosov maps \phik: Sk --> Sk of surfaces of genus 2k with one puncture whose growth rates converge to one. This answers a question of Birman. McMullen has previously shown that such a sequence exists.

This sequence has a number of other interesting properties, e.g., all the maps \phik are monodromies of certain fibered knots.
