Decompositions of stable homotopy equivalences
by

Stable homotopy classes of self-maps of a space X form a ring with respect to addition and composition. When X splits as a wedge-sum this ring becomes a generalized matrix ring. We will show that under suitable conditions its group of units admits a Bruhat-type decomposition, yielding a method for the computation of the group of stable self-homotopy equivalences of X.
