On embedding of the 2-sphere into the 2nd symmetric space of curves

Borsuk showed that the 2-sphere cannot be embedded into the product space of any two curves. We are discussing embedding properties of certain 2-dimensional compacta into the product of two curves. As its application we shall show that the 2-sphere cannot be embedded into the 2nd symmetric space of any curves.
