The role of groupoids in homotopy theory
by
Myles Tierney
Rutgers University
Traditionally, with perhaps the exception of the fundamental groupoid, only groups are considered in homotopy theory. However, we will argue, with many examples, that even to understand the role of groups, the full generality of groupoids is indispensable. There will be some contact with descent theory via the notion of ``stack''.
