Compact monoidal bicategories provide a framework in which Hopf algebras and their categories of representations exist as the same kind of algebraic structure: pseudomonoids with dualizations. There is a rich calculus of such structure based on, but going beyond, the formal theory of adjunctions and monads in a bicategory. This serves as an organizational setting for various results on quantum groups that had seemed only loosely analogous.
