Clustering via Mixture Models: some issues
by
Murray Jorgensen
Department of Statistics, University of Waikato

I give a general outline of the purpose and principles of the Finite Mixture Model approach to Cluster Analysis from the viewpoint of one of the developers of the Multimix program. I argue in favour of probability modelling approaches to Clustering and consider the form and role of the models, estimation principles, the treatment of outliers, and model selection principles.
