Measured laminations and group theory
by

I will discuss an alternative point of view on some recent results of Zlil Sela, using measured laminations on 2-complexes. Through some examples I hope to explain what "rigid" and "solid" extensions of homomorphisms to free groups are, and also revisit an old example of Razborov showing why a 2-quantifier sentence over free groups cannot always be written as a 1-quantifier sentence.
