Isolating segments and symbolic dynamics
by
Klaudiusz Wojcik
Auburn University

We present a geometric method for detecting complicated dynamics generated by periodic in time ODE's. The method is based on the notion of a periodic isolating segment. The isolating segment is a modification of an isolating block from the Conley index theory adapted to the setting of time-periodic ODE's. By complicated dynamics we mean the existence of symbolic dynamics and infinitely many periodic points for the Poincare map. Some applications to the planar periodic systems will be presented.
