The study of distribution of urban population is useful for planning development programs. As revealed by the recent census of India, 285 million people live in urban areas.Nearly 108 million of them reside in the first four urban agglomerations. 68% of this population is concentrated in the central (municipal corporation) areas. The extent of such concentration in the largest urban agglomerations is highlighted These staistics are compared with the pattern of distribution of urban population in 1991.
