Piezoelectric materials display a pronounced nonlinear behavior especially when subject to strong electric fields as is the case in structural control applications. The piezoelectric constitutive equations are modified to take into account terms nonlinear in the electric field. A pseudo-hysteretic model based on these equations is used to evaluate the influence of nonlinearities in the response of elastic structures incorporating piezoelectric actuators. Simple control laws based on the set of linear piezoelectric constitutive equations are employed to counter vibrations in simple beam and plate structures. The effect of the nonlinearities is qualitatively analyzed and guidelines to modify the control laws to account for the nonlinearities are drawn up.
