I will explain how duality considerations in the study of singular combinatorial 2-disc (diagrams) lead to innovations concerning the geometry of the word problem for finite presentations of groups. In particular, I will use the techniques to control how isoperimetry changes when one takes a central extension. Also I will give geometric inequalities that constrain the space complexity measure of the word problem called filling length.
