Realizing orbit closures via cohomology and representation theory
by
Daniel K. Nakano

Coauthors: Toshiyuki Tanisaki, Jon Carlson, Zongzhu Lin, Brian Parshall

In this talk, I will show how congugacy classes for classical Lie algebras g over fields of modular characteristic are related to the cohomology and representation theory of the Lie algebra via support varieties. Friedlander and Parshall asked over 20 years ago, whether orbit closures can be realized as support varieties of G-modules where Lie G=g. I will report on joint work with Tanisaki on settling this question as well as work with Carlson, Lin and Parshall on realizing the restricted nullcone.
