Pioneering in A New Frontier: China’s NGO Leadership
by

The development of the Chinese NGOs has been one of the most significant institutional change in China’s new socio-political landscape in the reform era. Not only has this development attracted international NGO society’s attention, in recent years, the study of NGOs also has become a new and rapidly growing academic field in China. Yet, very few studies have touched an important aspect of this subject: who are the people organizing, leading, and promoting China’s new NGOs? On the basis of very extensive field work in China and discussions with many Chinese NGO leaders, the proposed paper will discuss some major features of China’s NGO leadership, and it will sketch some high profile NGO leaders as examples to illustrate these features. The paper will argue that being the first generation of China’s NGO leaders, these people’s personal background, political perspective and their moral standard and values have shaped, to a great degrees, the mission, dynamics, performance, as well as the weakness of their organizations.
