According to the available literature, Italian seismic catalogues can be considered as complete (as for the large magnitude events) in the period subsequent to the 12th century. Moreover, the information about the reported earthquakes preceding the 12th century is largely incomplete as for the damage distribution. Since the second half of the 80s, archaeoseismological investigations and evidence of destruction at archaeological sites (presumably related to past earthquakes) has been published both in the seismological and the archaeological literature. Presently, a large amount of information of archaeosiesmological interest is available. This information is, however, not sistematically summarised. For this reason, we propose the editing of a first inventory of archaeoseimic events in Italy, prevalently based on the critical review of the available scientific material and on original investigations of significant case studies.
