The Dark Side of the Nile: Catastrophic Nile Floods and Human Respones in Ancient and Historical Times in Egypt
by

A series of severe droughts ca.4200 BP led to famines, strife, and the dissolution of centralized government in ancient Egypt. Following an initial episode of shock and upheaval, localized efforts to revive political coordination and management of Nile resources led to the re-emergence of centralized government on the basis of new ethical, social, adminstrative and technical platforms. Eyewitness accounts of droughts during the 10th and 12th centuries AD provide an insight into the social respones to catastrophic Nile floods in ancient times.
