We address the problem of optimally finding a region to establish an ecological reserve. Using the Decision Theory approach, we propose a suitable loss function which allows us to consider certain factors and/or restrictions arising in practice, which are not considered by other methods currently used. The loss function can be used in the context of the well-known Single Large or Several Small ecological debate, which is related to the form and connectivity of the region to be proposed as reserve. We present an extensive simulation study and a case study illustrating the method.
