Global existence for a model with complete damage

We consider a rate-independent damage model involving the gradient of the damage variable. For partial damage global existence of energetic solutions can be shown in quite general situations. If we allow for complete damage, the system degenerates and displacements are no longer defined. We propose a model that involves only the damage variable, the stresses and energy densities. We are able to show that this model is the evolutionary Gamma limit of the problems with partial damage, when the threshold tends to zero.
