Homology cobordism, concordance, and iterated p-covers
by

POSTECH

We investigate homology cobordism of 3-manifolds and link concordance using certain L-group-valued Hirzebruch-type invariants extracted from towers of iterated p-covers. The invariants are effective in detecting even amphichiral ones whose sophistication occurs at higher derived subgroups of the fundamental group. As an application we obtain the first proof of non-sliceness of iterated Bing doubles of certain amphichiral knots including the figure eight.
