It is already known that (1) among the continua that are not 2-to-1 retracts are all hereditarily indecomposable continua and of course all of the continua that are not 2-to-1 images at all, and (2) among the continua that are 2-to-1 retracts are all continua that contain a 2-to-1 retract, so in particular, all continua that are not hereditarily unicoherent. We are assuming that all of these functions have domains that are continua. This talk describes an unexpected technique for identifying and constructing 2-to-1 retracts.
