Free and Proper Actions of Groups on R^m×Sⁿ

Let \Gamma be a countable discrete group. We show that \Gamma acts freely and properly discontinuously on R^m×Sⁿ if and only if \Gamma has periodic cohomology after some steps and the periodicity isomorphism is given by cup product with an element of H^*(\Gamma, Z).
