Hereditary indecomposability and the Intermediate Value Theorem

We show that hereditarily indecomposable F-spaces can be characterized by a special instance of the Intermediate Value Theorem in their rings of continuous functions. We also discuss potentially useful consequences for hereditarily indecomposable metric continua.
