Successes and Failures in Mathematics Education-The Challenge Ahead
by
Megan Clark
Victoria University of Wellington
It is now 5 years since the introduction of ``Mathematics in the New Zealand Curriculum" and time to take stock. Some areas in which the curriculum made changes were manifestly correct and could be pursued even further. However the curriculum has signally failed to address other long-standing problems in mathematics education in New Zealand. For example the primary mathematics classroom is still far too competitive and we have not managed to provide a quality mathematics education for Maori or Pacific Nations pupils in the past. I believe that the mathematics education community is now skilled enough and confident enough to front up and tackle these issues and will suggest some ways forward.
