In 1957, M. P. Drazin introduced the notion of a pivotal monomial for a ring; this led to a structure theorem for primitive rings with pivotal monomial. As a first step toward a structure theory for prime rings with pivotal monomial, we show: if R is a prime ring with pivotal monomial of the form xn for some positive integer n, then R is isomorphic to Mk(D) for some division ring D with k <= n.
