On projective modules on the sphere
by
Antonio R. da Silva
Institute of Mathematics - Federal University of Rio de Janeiro

The purpose of this talk is to present some analytic applications of a study of projective modules over algebras of complex valued continuous functions on the sphere, that has been object of joint work with J.Mignaco, C.Sigaud and F. Vanhecke. These applications lie in the heart of the noncommutative geometry, a theory recently created by A.Connes. Among the tools we use is the trace theorem of Connes, relating the Dixmier trace to Wodzicki's noncommutative residue. This central result, in conjunction with a topological classification of projective modules, allows us to develop the so-called Connes-Lott program over the sphere.
