New Developments in Partial Differential Equations and in the Calculus of Variations: Applications to Problems in Materials Science
by
Irene Fonseca
Carnegie Mellon University
In recent years there have been remarkable developments in the theory of partial differential equations and in the calculus of variations, motivated in part by questions raised in materials science. Properties of advanced materials with technological and biomedical impact have led to the mathematical study of thin structures, multiscale problems, fracture and damage, and other challenging problems at the frontier of existing theories. This talk will address some new theoretical tools and innovative techniques that have been developed to respond to these questions.
