Discrete Variational Analysis
by

We are concerned with a discrete variational problem for the higher dimensional case. In this talk we develop conditions for local extrema of such a discrete problem, among them Euler's condition, Legendre's condition, the strengthened Legendre condition, and Jacobi's condition. We point out common features as well as discrepancies between the discrete and continuous theory. In particular the discrete version of Legendre's condition appears to be completely different from its continuous counterpart, and we will make an attempt to explain this situation.
