Oscillatory properties of the half-linear second order differential equation
(r(t)\Phi(x'))'+ c(t)\Phi(x) = 0,     \Phi(x) : = |x|p-2 x,     p > 1
(*)
are investigated. It is shown that some classical and also recently established oscillation and nonoscillation criteria for the linear Sturm-Liouville differential equation
(r(t)x')'+ c(t)x = 0
(which corresponds to the case p=2) extend in a natural way to (*). In particular, the integral characterization of the so-called principal solution of (*) is offered.
