Discrete Models of Dynamical Systems
by
Ronald E. Mickens
Clark Atlanta University

Dynamical systems modeled by differential equations are often discretized for purposes of numerical computation of their solutions. We show that this process can lead to classes of discrete equations, each of which gives entirely different solution behaviors. Thus, in addition to chaotic behavior of the solutions to individual equations, the different classes of discrete models also give solutions that depend in a sensitive manner on how they are constructed.
