Let v be a Krull valuation of a field K. We discuss some properties of prolongations of v to a simple transcendantal extension K(x) of K and show how these prolongations can be used to obtain an Irreducibility Criterion for polynomials with coefficients in K, and a generalization of the classical Hensel's Lemma.
