A contact structure on a 3-manifold is a completely non-integrable family of 2-planes, thus it is precisely the opposite of a codimension-1 foliation. In spite of this inauspicious start, and as a result of the work of many people, they are starting to play an important rôle in 3-dimensional topology. I'll discuss some relationships between tight contact structures and the more developed theory of taut foliations.
