On boundary properties of locally connected (Hausdorff) continua
by
Jacek Nikiel
American University of Beirut

S.Mardesic proved in 1967 that each Hausdorff space which is a continuous image of an ordered compactum is rim-metrizable, that is, it has a basis of open sets with metrizable boundaries. This result was strenghtened a lot by J.Nikiel, H.M.Tuncali and E.D.Tymchatyn in 1991, and by J.Grispolakis, J.Nikiel, J.N.Simone and E.D.Tymchatyn in 1993. Results obtained by H.M.Tuncali in his 1990 and 1991 papers suggested that rim-metrizable locally connected continua should have quite many interesting properties. This and several related questions led to many results and examples obtained during the last ten years. The talk will give a brief survey of them together with old and new questions in the area.
