On Clopen sets in Cartesian Products

Answers to the following questions are given.

Question 1. (communicated by Mike Reed) Is it always true that any clopen subset of the Cartesian product of two metrizable separable spaces X and Y can be represented as a union of clopen boxes?

Question 2. (Mike Reed) Is it always true that any clopen subset of the Cartesian product of two locally compact spaces can be represented as a union of clopen boxes?
