Plasticity theory is briefly reviewed, and work in progress on determining the orientation of fracture planes in stress space is summarised. This is a solved problem in two dimensions, due to contributions from Coulomb and Mohr. In three dimensions, additional assumptions are needed. Our present work on a fully plastic model is presented, and its relation to analogous work in elasto-plasticity theory described.
