The point-countable base problem
by
David McIntyre
University of Auckland
In 1984 and 1985, Collins, Roscoe, Reed and Rudin gave a characterisation of metrisability in terms of a ``local network'' structure with certain properties. At that time they posed the Point-Countable Base Problem. This asks whether a space with a certain type of local network must have a point-countable base.
Although this problem has been solved in a range of special cases, the general case remains open. In this talk we will present some of the history of the problem, and some possible approaches to a solution.
