If C is a class of (metric) continua, a member Y of C is said to be an absolute retract for the class C (writing AR(C)) if for any continuum Z in C such that Y is a subspace of Z, the continuum Y is a retract of Z. Recent results, as well as open questions and problems, concerning properties of members of AR(C) for various classes C of continua are collected in the paper. A special attention is paid to the class of hereditarily unicoherent continua and its subclasses. Most of the presented results are obtained by W. J. Charatonik, J. R. Prajs and the author.
