We consider a general type of eigenvalue problem for fourth-order elliptic operator in Rd, d <= 3. The eigenvalue occurs linearly in differential equation and in the boundary conditions. It is well known that the Galerkin methods depend on the variational formulations of the given boundary value problem. The conditions, when the variational a-form is symetric and the eigenfunctions belong to an appropriate Hilbert space, are presented. The corresponded mixed variational formulations are also discussed.
