Alpha-induction and Longo-Rehren subfactors
by

Alpha-induction is a method of extending endomorphisms from a subfactor to a larger factor using a braiding. It has been defined by Longo-Rehren and studied and applied by Xu, Bockenhauer, Evans and myself. Longo-Rehren subfactors give certain analogues of the quantum double construction of Drinfeld in the subfactor setting and produce the same categorical data as Ocneanu's asymptotic inclusions. Izumi found analogies between alpha-induction and Longo-Rehren subfactors, and made various detailed analysis. I will talk about these two constructions and their relations to topological quantum field theory and modular invariants.
