Near Varieties of Matroids
by
Steven Archer
Victoria University of Wellington
Varieties are classes of matroid's, satisfying a few simple properties, introduced and classified by Kahn and Kung.
Apart from a few degenerate cases they are just the projective geometries and Dowling geometries (which include the matroids of graphs). Near Varieties are an attempt to remove one of the requirements as well as the degenerative classes. This talk will give some current results.
