Vehicular Stopping - An Interactive Mathematical Model
by
Ravnder Kumar
Alcorn State University, Alcorn State, MS 39096, USA

Interactive models help explore the problem in a more realistic manner. They are a source of dynamic learning. We have used MathWright to develop an interactive model of vehicular stopping during a panic stop. The model starts by setting up the scenario with an animated page that shows and analyzes the driving of a cautious and a non-cautious driver. The solutions discussed vary from layman's rules to a more sophisticated rule that takes into consideration response time and braking factor. One can create one's own model and test it against an experimental model for which the data is taken from the US Bureau of Traffic. A page is provided for the student to conduct online exploration and electronically convey the findings to the instructor.
