With the main objective of studying competition among trees of the same or different species through their spatial distribution, single tree variables and data related to tree horizontal structure are analyzed using some Bahadur-optimal likelihood ratio tests.

Namely tests for i) the general linear hypothesis, ii) the equality of covariance matrices, iii) the equality of Normal distributions and iv) the independence of several sets of variables are used. Data were collected on growth and yield permanent plots installed in pure and mixed stands of Pinus pinaster, Castanea sativa and Quercus robur in central Portugal. Quantiles computed from near-exact distributions were used to carry out the tests, in cases where the exact distributions were too complicated to be used or were not even available.
