Fibrewise suspension and L.-S. category

We study a new approximation, denoted by Qcat, of the Lusternik Schnirelmann category which has been introduced recently by H. Scheerer, D. Stanley, and D. Tanré. This invariant can be characterized by means of the iterated fibrewise suspensions of the Ganea fibrations. We obtain in particular a product formula for Qcat. This leads to sufficient conditions for a space X to satisfy the Ganea conjecture i.e., cat(X ×Sn) = cat(X)+1 and new examples of such spaces are given.
