Updating Formula in an Analysis of Variance Model
by
John A John
Department of Statistics,University of Waikato, New Zealand

Methods for updating the inverse of the informtaion matrix in a regression analysis, after deleting one or more points, has been known and used for many years. These methods will be extended in a case where two points are exchanged in an analysis of variance model. An important application of this updating formula is in the construction of efficient experimental designs. It allows the chosen optimality criterion to be used directly in the interchange search algorithm, instead of less satisfactory surrogate objective functions. Some examples of its use in the construction of optimal or near-optimal designs will be given.
