The partial sums of an infinite series and the range of a measure
by
Pieter Maritz
University of Stellenbosch, South Africa

The connection between the topological structure of the set of subsums of an infinite series and the range of a measure will be discussed.

The relevant historical developments since the early 1900's and the importance of some papers on ranges of measures published during the years 1940-1950 will be emphasised.

Of special importance in this development is the 1945-paper of K.R. Buch [1]. The mere existence of this paper gave new direction to the study of ranges of measures.
