Let G be a locally compact group. A semigroup compactification of G is a compact, Hausdorff, right topological semigroup X which contains a dense, continuous, homomorphic copy \phi(G) of G and such that the mapping x --> \phi(s)x : X --> X is continuous for each s in G. We will survey new results on the algebraic structure of X of other authors and of our own.
