Cascadic Multigrid and Coarse-To-Fine-Homotopies
by
Folkmar Borneman
Department of Mathematics, Munich University of Technology , Germany

We start by reviewing the cascadic multigrid method for elliptic boundary value problems. It will be shown that so called coarse-to-fine-homotopies in the solution of nonconvex variational problems, as for instance free discontinuity problems, can be understood as a variant of cascadic multigrid. This viewpoint leads to considerable algorithmic improvements. Applications from fracture propagation in solid mechanics and from image segmentation will be shown.
