Clinical therapy planning by virtual patients
by
Peter Deuflhard
Konrad Zuse Zentrum Berlin (ZIB) and Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Free University of Berlin

The talk will present two projects of the author and his group in Numerical Analysis and Modelling together with his group in Scientific Visualization. The first one is concerned with the cancer therapy regional hyperthermia, a project in long and close cooperation with the Charite clinics in Berlin. Mathematically speaking, this project involves the fast and reliable numerical solution of Maxwell's equations and certain (linear or nonlinear) elliptic PDEs over a realistic 3D model of individual patients - called virtual patients. The second project is on computer assisted surgery in the cranio-facial region, a recent project in close cooperation with a university clinics (TU) in Muenchen. Examples of real and virtual patients will be given - showing the decisive impact of Scientific Computing in both of these fields of medicine.
