Mesh Generation for Domains with Unspecified Boundaries

In bio-mechanics problems, the domain to be meshed is given in the form of 2D or 3D digital images obtained via CT, MR, or similar techniques. In order to conduct stress analysis using numerical techniques such as the Finite Element Method, one needs to form a mesh of the underlying anatomical structures. However, it is often very difficult and not natural to form a solid model, which is required by the meshing algorithms. With this motivation, we will investigate a possible meshing strategy for domains with unspecified boundaries. The method will exploit a function assigning a probability to each point in the domain that will reflect how probable the point is to be a boundary point. The method will then divide the domain into elements, exploiting the local geometry of this function.
