The application of mixed models to microarray experiments

The application to micro-array experiments of Mixed Models which include random AR(1) spatial modelling and cubic splines to investigate response bias, is a natural extension of methodology routinely used for field experiments. We have explored a number of data sets using these methods in which the responses of interest, in our case Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs), are estimated as BLUPs, individuals of which are selected from Q-Q plots. The methods have proved to be effective in both modelling and helping to understand nuisance effects and in identifying up/down regulated ESTs. We conclude this standard methodology can be confidently applied to the micro-array data we have so far interpreted.
