Using distance sampling to assess the impact of a possum control operation on tomtits

There is limited understanding of the population changes of tomtits and other small native birds in New Zealand. Recently, we used distance sampling techniques, along with more traditional banding techniques, to estimate tomtit populations in Tongariro forest. The project involved sampling before and after a possum poison operation using 1080 cereal baits at both treated and untreated sites. I will assess the value of distance sampling for counting tomtits, and assess the impact of the operation on tomtits.
