The estimation of the population size is an important problem in ecology, epidemiology, software reliability, and other areas. We consider this estimation problem based on continuous capture-recapture method, i.e. individuals are marked and returned to the population for possible recaptures that may happen at any time. A two-step procedure based on the conditional likelihood is proposed to estimate the population size for both parametric and semi-parametric models. Simulation results are given to illustrate the performance of the method. The method is also applied to a real bird banding dataset in Hong Kong.
